Jazz music is an essential aspect of the culture in New Orleans. This is no surprise and the city is well known for having some of the greatest jazz clubs and musicians in the world. It was also fundamental in the development of this music genre and establishing it as a major musical force. It is only natural that the city continues to celebrate and honor this great tradition in more ways than support of the clubs. There is an annual festival that attracts the nation’s interest and support and some of the greatest performers in the world. In addition to celebrating jazz music itself, the festival recognizes the importance of music, and in this case jazz music to society and the development of New Orleans culture.

The historic hotels are full many times throughout the year. With events like Mardi Gras and major festivals and events occurring in and around the city, it’s always a great idea to check a travel directory and to be sure to make your reservations for a New Orleans hotel as early as possible. And with that being accepted, you are free to enjoy the great music and delicious food found at this incredible festival.

The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival began in 1970 with the return of Mahalia Jackson to her hometown. She was often regarded as the best gospel singer in existence and this initial festival was a celebration of excellence as much as it was the heritage relevance. This is a tradition that has remained with the festival throughout the decades and each year prominent musicians and bands are featured in the spring event. With great music, from the local and international pool, being performed all day and into the night and fabulous food available, this is one of the main events in New Orleans every year. Some of this year’s headliners included Van Morrison, B.B.King and The Neville Brothers. Pearl Jam, Gipsy Kings and Simon and Garfunkel were also major performers.
