Advancements in Home Entertainment

When it comes time to watch a movie, more and more people are choosing to sit down in front of their TVs and pick up their remote controls. These days that is all you need to do to be able to watch the latest movies. Which begs the questions, does anyone even go to the movie theater anymore?

Let’s look at the benefits of watching a movie at home rather than in the theater:

  • Most people’s houses are a lot quieter than your average movie theater. Add that to the convenience of not having to leave the house to watch a movie, and it is easy to see why people are installing home entertainment systems and choosing to stay out of the movie theaters.
  • When watching movies at home on-demand, there is no one blocking anyone else’s view of the screen and no need to struggle to hear the movie because of inconsiderate movie goers making too much noise.
  • Refreshments are readily available and the movie can be paused long enough to grab those refreshments, or take a much needed bathroom break.

When most people move to a new house, the first thing they do is make sure the cable TV is connected and set up their entertainment center. The advancements in home entertainment mean people are watching movies at home more than they ever did before. Technology now allows people to have surround-sound and big screen TVs in their homes. To create the ultimate at home movie experience, industry experts recommend having anywhere from four to six speakers in a home theater. For optimum sound quality, two or three speakers should be placed on either side of the TV and two or three should be placed either to the side of or behind, wherever one chooses to sit to watch a movie, whether that be on a couch or other seat.

There are two different types of surround- sound options to choose from when setting up an at home entertainment system. One is Digital Theater Systems and the other is Dolby Laboratories. Digital Theater Systems carries a whole range of different sound formats called DTS Digital Theater. Dolby Laboratories manufactures such options as Dolby Pro Logic and Dolby Digital.

As more people choose to stay home and watch movies, the demand for elaborate home entertainment centers will increase and movie theater attendance may decrease drastically.

Lego-Zombie, Supanova in Sydney

Any time someone makes a reference to popular culture, there is a distinct possibility that there will be a visceral reaction from someone else in the room.  There are those who are far from its influence, shying away from any complex discussions of what some might consider mundane topics, or even keeping all mediums of communication limited.  There are others who really can’t help themselves, keeping all the lines and channels open, and making great efforts to keep up with the latest in everything.  Still others just have a special sense for the kitschiness of pop culture, drawn to it because it holds an endless supply of moments that are potentially delightful.

It’s one of the great pleasures, then, for those who are so wired to respond whenever an obscure television reference comes up, to discover new pockets of culture that feel the same.  It’s hard to call it a subculture, exactly, although there are those in Sydney who would call it an alternative phenomenon.  It’s just that by its very nature, pop culture is very much the stuff of the mainstream.  Perhaps it’s in the obsession and fanaticism that it starts to enter into another realm altogether.

However the definitions wash out, there are many options for the curious cultural adventure-seekers in Australia.  There are times of the year when one can step out of their Hilton Hotel Sydney location,

and walk into one of the most extravagant celebrations of pop in the world.  The Pop Culture Expo called Supanova is still in what might be called its rough beginnings, but it seems to be making a pretty smooth setting out.

This is well-trod territory, where celebrity appearances dot the conventions itinerary, and the events are all hyperlinked on all the latest digital devices.  What is original, however, and impossible to replicate, is the energy that the fans and participants bring.  Dressing up and going out as a living quotation from tv, film, music, etc., isn’t necessarily original, but it certainly becomes that whenever another generation invents it.  In Australia, it takes on some new and startlingly wonderful directions.

Some of the most significant, and often under-recognized, contributions to the phenomenon started here, after all, and it is the sort of place where 70s fashion is still not at all out of style.  Trends are set, and new identities are forged, in a remarkably visionary place, and pop culture enthusiasts from all over the world are likely to find themselves perfectly at home.  Here, differences and similarities in global pop culture rise to the surface, and participants have no choice but to engage in the celebration of everything.  A Sydney dining guide and a ticket to pop culture, and there’s a delightful time up ahead.

Arnold and MariaArnold and Maria

Hasta La Vista, Baby.

It looks like Maria Shriver has decided to “terminate” her marriage to former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The former couple made a statement to the press on May 9th saying that they have been living apart for some time and both reached the decision to officially separate after 25 years of marriage.  Sources say that Maria has even been living separately from Arnold since he left the office in January of this year. However, the couple claims that they will still strive to maintain a cordial relationship for their four children.   Since leaving office Arnold has claimed that he intends to rekindle his acting career.

Paula Adbul was recently revealed to be the latest judge to join Simon Cowell’s X-Factor. The list of judges for the show now consists of Simon Cowell (of course), Paul Adbul, L.A. Reid, and Cheryl Cole. We’ve missed the dynamic between the obnoxious Simon and innocent Paula ever since the duo went their separate ways during the days of American Idol. There are sure to be plenty of insults flying and tears shed by both the judges and the contestants. Here’s hoping though that Simon just brings his dream-crushing King Kong sized ego along with him.
