The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival began in 1970 with the return of Mahalia Jackson to her hometown. She was often regarded as the best gospel singer in existence and this initial festival was a celebration of excellence as much as it was the heritage relevance. This is a tradition that has remained with the festival throughout the decades and each year prominent musicians and bands are featured in the spring event.
