The symphony is one of the oldest orchestras in Asia. It was originally founded by Alexander Lippay in 1926 and the organization has played an essential and important role in Philippine history. Throughout its decades, and near century, of existence, the symphony has hosted numerous internationally recognized special guest artists. Among these are the renown American born violinist Yehudi Menuhin , Spanish operatic soprano Montserrat Concepcion Caballe and the great Ukrainian violinist Igor Oistrakh. Some of the guest conductors that have preformed with the symphony include Arthur Fiedler, Mendi Rodan and Andre Kostelanetz. Among some of the distinctive programs and performances the symphony has introduced are the Young Artists Competition and the Luneta Concerts, also known as the Concerts in the Park. The competition for young activists is intended to promote standards of excellence in the new generations while also recognizing and demonstrating appreciation for outstanding talent and achievement. This circular perspective is extremely effective at promoting an enthusiasm for listening to and playing classical music by the youth.
